They say the best way to prevent a hangover is to not drink at all. I prefer the method of drinking so much you wake up drunk. Hey, you’re not hungover, right?
While I am no organic chemist, I do remember a few things from high school chemistry. Particularly, I remember that Carbon rings (a.k.a. the blackness on burnt toast) work great to absorb other chemicals, especially those toxins that make Saturday and Sunday mornings yucky.
I initially inadvertently tried the Burnt Toast Method (BTM) last week while at dinner. I intentionally executed BTM yesterday morning. It worked like magic, although it didn’t taste the best. I now swear by the BTM.
Here are the steps:
- Drink in excess, preferably in the company of friends or debutantes.
- Wake up the next morning with a splitting headache, groggy, and exhausted.
- Stumble to cupboard or cafeteria.
- Burn toast with vigor (some black but not completely cardboard).
- Apply a dressing of some sort. I prefer a burnt bagel with cream cheese.
- Observe as your hangover disappears at a significantly quicker pace.
- Start drinking again.

Very good idea, although the thought of eating blackened toast/bagel makes my mouth hurt.

It’s an interesting suggestion I would caution you that the charred bits on any food contain cancer-causing chemicals. You may want to limit the amount of charred stuff you eat.

The carbon will only absorb toxins that are still in you stomach. It’s like Activated Charcoal, for poisonings, it will only work while things are still in your stomach. Once they move into the blood stream, burnt toast won’t be of much help. You could try eating the toast before you start drinking, but I can’t imagine either way having any real effect.

I think that you expect it to absorb bad toxins and end up with the placebo effect. I agree with Jeremy the only way it MIGHT work is before, during or immediantly after drinking. How much could be left in that empty stomach the next day? You can rid yourself of a lot of the toxins by a big huge dump.

Yeah….i think that burnt stuff on toast is carcinogenic.

Burnt toast doesn’t work. First of all, the carbon on burnt toast is not the same thing as activated charcoal. Secondly, even if it was, it still wouldn’t help because activated charcoal only sops up toxins in your stomach or gut. The alcohol and acetaldehyde (breakdown product that causes hangover symptoms) is in your BLOOD. You’re better off having eggs and fruit juice in the morning to replenish the cysteine in your liver that helps detoxify alcohol, and all the vitamins you peed out the night before. Plus salty scrambled eggs taste a lot better than burnt toast.

Don’t underestimate the placebo effect… just keep telling yourself that the burnt toast method works!

I can’t see this working either, but I am willing to give it a try as I love a lot of my food (steak, toast, chicken, bacon) overcooked

Another way of preventing hangovers is consuming a table spoon of oil before drinking. Personally I have never tried it before but I was told it works.
