Mother’s Day Idea: Frame an Extraordinary Photo!

9:26 pm on May 11th, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

For those of you with access to Adobe Photoshop or know your way around Gimp, you might want to frame a picture of you and Mom. Trust me. These always go over very well. 7 steps:

(1) To begin, choose a picture. One with you and Mom. Easy enough.

(2) Then, to turn that ordinary photo into an extraordinary photo, I recommend checking out Blurbomat’s Adobe Photoshop Tutorial. I’m not that skilled, but I was able to go from (below) to (further below):

Then, (3) save the final image on a cd or usb disk or other memory card, (4) go to your local printing shop, (5) get it nicely printed to your liking, (6) go and buy a nice frame, and (7) either ship it or deliver it.

Done!

Mother’s Day Idea: Prepare Heart-Shaped Pancakes!

9:04 pm on May 11th, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

Ya’ll know the drill:

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring mothers, celebrated (on various days) in many places around the world. Mothers often receive gifts on this day. [via Wikipedia]

Struggling to decide how best to show your mother your appreciation? If you’re in-state and will go home for the weekend, why not prepare breakfast?

Don’t worry. This is easy. Go pick up some “just add water” pancake mix and make ‘em in the shape of hearts. (Or: I guess if you could find a big enough heart-shaped cookie cutter, you could just make normal-shaped pancakes and cut them out)

Awww… For extra fun, pick up some strawberries or strawberry jam [image from lowcarbluxury.com].

College Classifieds

4:47 pm on May 11th, 2007 by Jason Shore

Rosario mentioned yesterday about the new service, Oodle classifieds for Facebook. Although Oodle is a new service, there are some alternative sites that have been around for college students to buy, sell, and barter. Several of these sites will give Facebook classifieds a run for it’s money - but Facebook’s enormous user base will be hard to contend with.

Chegg - Chegg (as in chicken and egg) started out as a site to buy and sell textbooks, but now have expanded to an online shopping site. You can browse items from numerous campuses and have them shipped right to your door. How is that for convenience?

Welcome to Oodle Classifieds! Now instead of just sending tons of spam via Email, graduating seniors can now also advertise their couches and textbooks and TVs and lamps and everything else via Facebook. Sweet.

Don’t Sleep Through An Early-Morning Exam!

12:31 pm on May 7th, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

Exams here at Yale start tomorrow. For those of you with an early-morning exam, it’s a smart idea to schedule a wake-up call.

You can ask a friend, or you can register with TelePixie.com. They offer free wake-up calls (among many other things). You can even choose whether you want a Female or Male voice to wake you up. Tip: If you’re a really heavy sleeper, set, maybe, 3 scheduled calls to ENSURE that you are, indeed, up.

Another service is CallTheFuture.org, which doesn’t require you to sign-up but has a limit. Note: They monitor their service, so prank calling is, as always, a no-no.

Short Apology

Sorry, between working graduation, finals, my birthday, and moving out, I haven’t had time to write posts. I’ll write a few the next day or two before I drive home (with Trippish).

Here’s something to keep you busy until the next post.

Cinco de Mayo: Food, Drink, and Mariachi Music!

11:16 am on May 5th, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

You all can Wikipedia “Cinco de Mayo” on your own, but I felt like this video did a good, concise job:

And about celebrating, there are 3 ingredients: food, drink, and music.

  • Check out the recipes over at PerfectEntertaining.
  • For drinks, my favorite Mexican beer has always been a nice Corona. I typically take a lime wedge and go around the rim of the bottle before placing it all the way in because I like a little salt on the rim of it. Other nice Mexican beers include Sol, Pacifico, Tecate, Negro Modelo, Dos Equis, Bohemia, Victoria, Tijuana Guera, and Tijuana Morena.

Or, if you’d like to celebrate this day further, I’d recommend making a Michelada:
Squeeze 1 green lemon (or lime, I guess) into a mug.
    Add a pinch of salt.
Add 3 ice cubes, but this isn’t required.
Add a dash of Tabasco Sauce.
Add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce
Pour in slowly your favorite Mexican beer.
    Mix and enjoy.

  • To get some nice mariachi music goin’, check out MariachiRadio.com or the Mariachi section of Batanga.com.

Download It!: ChatZilla (Firefox)

1:51 pm on May 4th, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

Earlier I posted on how to download torrents via Firefox. But the real old-school chatters and downloaders, they use IRC –which is less likely to be blocked at your college campus.

ChatZilla provides all the usual IRC client features: multiple servers, a built-in list of standard networks, easy searching and sorting of available channels, logging, and DCC chat and file transfers, plus easy customization with JavaScript plug-ins and CSS styling.

To search for downloads, check out:

Perfect a Foreign Language via Skype

12:20 pm on May 4th, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

Every college I’ve heard of has the foreign language requirement. With exams coming up, I’m sure many of you have review sheets that you’re spending hours filling out in study groups. I know a friend of mine last night was asking me for help with his French.

To which, I replied, “Par-lay-vu sans Franz-ay.” He laughed. I speak no French.

But here’s a tip: Find a native speaker on Skype! Because, well, the WORLD does not use AMERICA Online Instant Messenger.

Continue Reading for further instructions on how to find a native speaker, if you’re not familiar with Skype.

Joost: We Have Invites

3:36 pm on May 3rd, 2007 by Rosario Doriott

Again, for those of you with final exams: IGNORE THIS POST. It’s another distraction.

But for those of with time on your hands, I’d like to introduce you all to Joost (if you haven’t already heard of it):

From BET to Comedy Central to Guinness World Records TV to Healthination to MTV to even Ren and Stimpy, Joost is a great way for the college student with a high-speed Internet connection but without an actual television set to catch their favorite shows (a full channel list is here) via their PC. For free. Awesome.

So if you’d like an invitation to join Joost (as it’s currently invitation-only), just leave us a comment with your email address, and we’ll send you one!

[Edit] No more invites! [/Edit]
