Right now, Microsoft is offering all Xbox Live Silver members (IE those not currently paying for Gold – sorry, you won’t be able to extend your current membership) a FREE month of Xbox Live. What’s the catch you ask? You simply must sign up for the promotion using a valid form of payment (that means credit card or PayPal account). However, you should HURRY because this offer won’t last long (it’ll likely be gone in a few days). If you don’t feel comfortable providing your information to the folks in Redmond, you can create a virtual credit card number. If you carry plastic from Discover, Bank of America, or Citibank, you should be able to set up a virtual account number for free. Once you either create your virtual account number (or if you can’t/don’t want to), here’s how to get your free month:

1. Visit this link and click on the green square for “Get 1 Month Free Now” – Duh! While the site says it’s only open to EPIX subscribers, ignore this – it should work for all current Silver members.

2. Log in with your Windows Live ID linked to your Xbox Live Account. If you haven’t already done this, do it! It makes interacting with Microsoft products much, much easier.

3. Continue through the forms where it asks you to sign up, and enter in your valid form of payment when asked.

That’s it! Your status should change to Gold immediately, and you can enjoy all the benefits of Xbox Live Gold for free! Take note that you subscription is automatically set to renew, so if you don’t want that to happen, turn your auto-renew off immediately. To do so, click on “My Account,” in the upper right corner of the Xbox page, and then click on “(Change)” under automatic renewal right in the middle of the page next to your avatar. Enjoy fragging noobs during dead week!
