Keep your roommate happy with these helpful tips.

Let’s face facts: you probably don’t do laundry as often as you should. As a result, your gym clothes are likely retaining more of that musty, sweaty smell than those who have to be around them would prefer. So here’s a few simple suggestions that will keep your dormmate from walking around with a clothespin on their nose.

Use Soap in Your Closet/Dresser

One of the quickest and easiest ways of keeping your clothes smelling nice is to use impromptu air fresheners where you store your clothes to help mask any lingering smells on your  clean clothes. A great way to do this is to take a bar of soap and begin to shave it down. Collect the shavings and then place around half a cup to a cup of shavings in plastic bags. Keep the bags open, and place them in your drawers. If you’re using a closet, try distributing them in even intervals around the top and bottom of the closet. Within an hour, you should start noticing a fresher smell coming from your clothes.

This practice works for other scented items as well, such as a few sticks of cinnamon or cloves stuck into a citrus fruit like an orange or a grapefruit. These options provide more natural smells for your clothes, but just make sure to replace them once a week or so to prevent rotting.

Add White Vinegar to Your Laundry

Sometimes, laundry detergent doesn’t quite cut it when it comes to getting your clothes smelling fresh. For clothes that are particularly soiled, try adding a cup or two of white vinegar into your next load. White vinegar helps neutralize deep-set odors and, when used in small amounts in conjunction with laundry detergent, won’t leave any lingering vinegar smell.

Also, try adding in a few sprays of your favorite cologne or perfume to help add a pleasant smell, but be sure not to overdo it.

Put Fabric Sheets in Your Shoes

Whether they’re gym shoes, boots, or flats, the chances of your footwear being stinky is more likely than not. When you’re not wearing them, try putting dryer sheets inside the shoes to help add a pleasant odor while also soaking up some of the bad smell. Make sure these sheets get changed daily.
