While you’re striving to hack the collegiate life, between keeping up with your studies and making time for your social life, one of the biggest challenges is knowing how to cook on a budget. When you’re burnt out on ramen and sick of spaghetti, it’s comforting to know that one of the tastiest treats out there is affordable, easy to cook, and pairs perfectly with just about everything. This miracle food is, of course, bacon. Packed with protein and sure to satisfy, bacon isn’t just insanely delicious, it’s also long been one of the most affordable meats on the market. And the gentle sizzling of bacon in the pan goes beyond just what you know tastes good: It carries in its smoky smell the breeze of camaraderie, and a hint of knowing that as long as there’s bacon on the table, exams will be aced, parties will be attended, and life will be fruitful.

But if you’re up on the news, you know that the summer of 2012 marked the worst draught in the past 50 years of American history, and that the lack of rain has begun to threaten the livelihood of our beloved bacon. When the crops don’t receive water, they don’t grow. And when the crops don’t grow, the pigs don’t eat. And while bacon probably won’t disappear from our lives entirely, the rising costs of it may soon rob humble college students of the once-cheap meal staple.

Take a look at the following infographic, and consider where the world would be without bacon.
