Throughout the month of January, Amazon is offering students a $50 discount on its highest-end tablet, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″. The discount is available to Amazon Student members, a program for college students that includes six months of free Amazon Prime and exclusive deals.

If you’re not a member, signing up is a no-brainer. You’ll need access to a .edu e-mail address in order to sign up, along with an active credit card on file with Amazon. However, you will not be charged for any service until your six month trial period has ended, after which you’ll receive Amazon Prime for only $39 a year, a $40 discount off the regular yearly non-student membership.

The 16GB Wi-Fi version of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ becomes only $250 with the discount applied, half the price of the 16GB Wi-Fi version of Apple’s iPad. An incredible bargain to say the least. The discount is also valid on other versions of the HD 8.9″, of course, including the 4G LTE variation.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ features a, shockingly enough, 8.9-inch display with 1920×1200 resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and a dedicated graphics processor for fast game and video performance.
