Wearable fitness devices such as the Fitbit and Jawbone UP are becoming common must-have for both runners and health-tracking enthusiasts. But Intel’s new “Smart Earbuds,” announced yesterday at CES, are taking a different route, using sensors attached to the earbuds to display and track heart rate, as well as display pace and calories burned.

The new wearable is being demoed using Android apps — one that acts as a standard tracker and a music player called “LionHeart” that shuffles songs based on your activity level (using the heartbeat monitor).

We’re pretty fans of the Quantified Self movement here at HackCollege, so it’ll be interesting to see where these earbuds fit into the wearable space. Fitbit and Jawbone do not currently track heart rate.
